Don Limpert, Museum Founder

Don Limpert, a long-time collector of Civil War and Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) memorabilia from Manchester, Michigan, was interested in locating a home for many of his extensive G.A.R. collection. In 2013, he purchased what had been many years earlier, the James B. Brainerd Post 111 G.A.R. building in Eaton Rapids, which had been on the market for several years. Shortly thereafter a nonprofit corporation was established, a Board of Directors elected, and the building was deeded over to the nonprofit corporation.

Initially starting out with about 200 artifacts and records from Don’s collection, Michigan’s G.A.R. Memorial Hall & Museum has since grown, with an additional 200 items from Don and many other artifacts and records coming from individuals from all over the state and country, to become the premier G.A.R. museum in the state of Michigan with over 4,700 artifacts and records and the only such museum in the state that is solely dedicated to ensuring that the memory and accomplishments of the Grand Army of the Republic and its members in Michigan are not forgotten.
